Reg Maxwell – Gardening Guru

Reg Maxwell - The Show's Resident Gardening Guru

Regular BBC Radio Ulster’s Gardeners’ Corner contributor, Reg Maxwell, will once again be at the Show to answer queries and pick out special plants.

Reg’s relationship with Garden Show Ireland goes back to our very first Show when the Belfast City Council “Narnia” Show Garden designed by Reg Maxwell won Best in Show.

Growing up, Reg’s ambition at school was to be a gardener, a career he went on to fulfil for 60 years. As a boy he had a greenhouse full of Cacti.

Starting as an apprentice gardener he then went to Pershore College of Horticulture and from there worked as a Garden Centre manager in Gloucestershire.

For the following 38 years until his retirement he then worked in Belfast Parks as Assistant Director/Area Manager, his work covering all aspects of parks, playing fields, cemeteries and his beloved Botanic Gardens. The development of the Show team was one of the highlights in his time at the Parks Department which won many Awards and Gold Medals.

Design and working with exotic plants and natural landscapes was always Reg’s specialism. He is still involved in garden consultancy, is an International Rose judge, Landscape Awards Assessor and member of a number of Horticultural and Heritage Committees.
