Cancer Focus NI – Ribbon Garden

Cancer Focus NI Team Garden Challenge 2017

This is the second year that Cancer Focus NI has entered the team challenge at Allianz Garden Show Ireland. We are delighted to have them back and have asked CEO Roisin Foster to tell us about their experience.

“It was great fun to do and a really positive way for Trustees, volunteers and staff members to get to know each other by creating a beautiful garden.

This year the Cancer Focus NI team is made up of Trustee Violet Spence, CEO Roisin Foster and staff members from Communications, Income Generation, Family Support, Retail and Cancer Prevention. Many of our team work out in the community in clinics, community centres or people’s own homes and this is an excellent opportunity to work alongside and get to know colleagues you see only from time to time.”

Roisin also talks about their garden for this year which follows the theme Something Old…Something New.

“Our garden plans have been enhanced by the voluntary efforts of local artist Jasper McKinney MBE who designed the garden and created the mosaics, Harry Morrow who built the bridge and Ian and Adam Foster who produced scaled architects drawings.

The Cancer Focus NI garden brings together the concept of the ancient Shinto Garden, which combines natural elements of rock, water and plants to create a tranquil environment, with the new visual identity of Cancer Focus which represents the charity’s growth over the past 50 years. The logo is created from modern materials. Around the logo is a pathway of bark and gravel representing the cancer support ribbon and the cancer patient’s journey. The bark river runs beneath a bridge created from salvaged wood to a small water feature.

Plants have been chosen to create a tranquil feel inspired by Japanese gardens – acers, ferns, moss with some plants home grown. The feature bamboos, the authentic Japanese lantern, the salvaged driftwood and the little water feature are on loan from family and friends of the charity.”

We simply cannot wait to see the finished product!
